What to pack for Far North Queensland in Winter and Summer in Australia
What to pack for Mission Beach and the rest of Far North Queensland
Mission Beach: The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef! But now you have booked your holiday, you may ask yourself “what do I pack?” To make the most of your trip, follow these packing tips and tricks from tourists and of course the locals
Summer weather all year! But…
As any tropical climate, you will be greeted with summer weather all year round however you can expect a slight difference in winter and summer here in Mission Beach. Swimming is pleasant all year round but we recommend swimming between April and October. Water temperatures range from 23 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius from July to February. During November to March, Tropical North Queensland becomes home to box jellyfish and swimming enclosures are in place to protect swimmers at popular beaches. You can take going-out outfits but most restaurants and bars are casual with summer dresses, khaki shorts and singlets being the clothing of choice.
Winter, which is between (May to October) tends to be slightly less warm than summer but hot nonetheless (the temperature varies between 18 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius) and also considered the dry season so we recommend packing:
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- A hat that won’t blow off
- Thongs (flip flops)
- Sneakers/Runners/Trainers for bush walks
- Shorts
- Vests
- Flowy dresses or trousers
- Flowy tops
- Loose Tshirts
- Swimwear
- Snorkel and Goggles (but you can rent this too)
- Wet Bag for the beach
- Water Bottle
Summer (November to April) tends to be wetter so we recommend ALSO packing:
- Rain jacket
- Stinger suit (if you have one)
- Mosquito Spray
- Enclosed bags (so that if it rains, your belongings stay dry)
Tips for packing!
- Roll, don’t fold – you will save space and your clothes won’t crinkle the same
- Pack dirty, sandy shoes in plastic bags
- Seperate your personal items and make sure if they spill they won’t ruin your clothes
- Remember that you can probably wash your clothes on the way
- Fill gaps (like the insides of shoes) with socks and other small items like chargers
- Use a packing list, add to it. Create the list a few weeks before an keep adding to it so you don’t forget anything
- Have a few essentials in your carry-on just in case you are left without your bag for a few days
